Proof of Concept
The concept for the Areal Nord is gaining traction—Intuitive Surgical is the first company to set up shop there, with more high-tech firms and research institutes set to follow soon.
Intuitive Surgical
The global market leader in robot-assisted surgery has established its new European headquarters in the Areal Nord district. With approximately 30,000 square meters of gross floor area, the facility accommodates 600 employees—a new three-story building housing administrative offices, a training center, and production facilities. The design concept is based on the company’s internal sustainability strategy, supplemented by the criteria of the German Sustainable Building Council (DGNB). Designed as a multi-story structure, it allows for significantly more usable space to be realized on a smaller footprint. Thanks to the energy-optimized construction method, energy consumption is reduced by 60 percent compared to conventional buildings. Heat requirements are met by renewable energy sources as well as process waste heat from the neighboring company Cerdia.

Fraunhofer EMI
The Fraunhofer Institute for Transient Dynamics / Ernst Mach Institute (EMI) is active in military and civil security research. In the Areal Nord district, it will build a modern research and development campus on a site covering approximately 28,000 square meters, which will consolidate various locations, bring dispersed teams together, and enable an expansion of research activities. Preliminary planning and the bidding process for the project are currently underway.
Endress+Hauser
The measurement technology and automation specialist, with deep roots in the border triangle region, is investing a high double-digit million euro amount in its own corporate campus. On a site spanning approximately 20,000 square meters, a six-story building with training rooms and a two-story production facility are being constructed—with a total usable floor area of over 15,000 square meters. 450 workstations, previously scattered across the region, will be consolidated here. The move is a clear commitment to the Freiburg location—and to the principle of multi-story construction.
